APPOINTMENT OF COUNTY VALUER.
The Chairman at the last meeting of the - County Council said there was a matter which he thought should now be taken into consideration — viz., that of Valuer, and he did not think the Council could do better than appoint their Collector," Mr Uren. He was sure they could not get a better or more conscientious man, besides he had now gained considerable experience of the County. Mr Brown remarked that this had been his opinion from the first, but Mr Uren was now in a better position than anybody else. He believed by this means the expenses would be found less than before, and the work better done. He was not prepared to say what it Bhould be done for. The Chairman: He could bring in his voucher for his expenses. At present he undertakes the collecting for L2OO a jear and p^tys his own expenses. He believed that Mr Uren would be" quite agreeable to do the val- - nation in addition to the collecting for the L2OO a year clear. -_, Mr Brown did not agree with this. The Council should give him something to recompense him for the work. It was too bad to 'impose extra duties and give nothing for their performance. Mr Clayton thought he had moved in this matter before. He was under the impression that the Collector was to get LIOO to pay his travelling -expenses. Mr Brown moved "That Mr Uren be ap«*pointed Valuer, without travelling expenses, at LIOO a year." MrjClayton seconded. Mr Rodger thought the motion was premature. \ There could be nojdoubt Mr Uren was a good, man, but he did not see the necessity *.olappointing him now. He is a servant cf the Council and they could get him any time. The duties of Collector and Valuer were altering from time to time. Any valuations "aow made might be no good at another tints, i He nidved as an artendmenfc " Tliat no action , .be now taken." • ' "The amendment was not seconded. . The Chairman remarked that the chief ! thing to be considered was the competency of , the person. As he had previously stated, Mr TJren was quite prepared to perform the duties for L 4 a week clear, and it was questionable if LIOO a year would pay his expenses. . • Mr Brown's idea in fixing upen a sum was . that it was much more satisfactory to the Council to know what they were paying than ' have vouchers coming in. ' The motion was then put and carried.
