COUNTY VALUATOR. (To the Editor.)
Sib, — I see at the last meeting of the Couucil that Mr P. Uren was appointed Valuator at a £100 per annum without travelling expenses. It appears strange that the Council cannot definitely settle this matter; first, tenders are called for each riding, next tenders for the whole of the ridings, and now Mr P. Uren is appointed at £100 per annum. Who is to get the appointment of Collector ? Would it not be better to pay Mr Uren a fixed salary of, gay, £200 per annum for Valuator and Collector to the Council P Valuations for the several ridings can now easily be done in the office at Lawrence. As the valuation lists hare been ' corrected and revised twice, there is no necessity to go orer the ground again. The "Valuator could ascertain from the representatives of the sereral ridings if any changes have taken place in their ridings — such as land being taken up for settlement, change of ownership, or any great improvement that would necessitate a visit from him. — I am, &c, Jttno. Waipori, 18th July, 1878.
