HERIOT HUNDRED ROAD.
Mr Crawford, in his letter to the Council 'on Friday last, with reference to his account, drew their attention to the time which had elapsed since thejwork was done. The contract was finished two months £90, notice of which was given to the Engineer. Two days after it was completed, a slip of nearly 3000 cubit yards of earth took place ; but he states the slip was not occasioned by any defects in the manner in which his work had been done. When' the Engineer was informed of the slip, he advised that it should be allowed to remain untouched till the spring. He asked the Conucil to make some proposal as to the settlement of the accrmnt. Mr Crawford suggested that the sum of £241 33-should be paid at once, and the deposit retained by the Council until the matter is settled. The account was as follows :—: — Contract, No. 22, Heriot Hundred Road. Amount as per tender £93110 6 Extras, 2by 2 culverts 60 0 0 „ 18 by 18 culverts ... 78 8 0 ! _ Total ... £1069 18 6 Credit byfeash on account ... £820 7 0 Less 12 in. box drain 8 8 0 £828 15 0 £241 3 6 Amount of deposit ... ... 46 11 6 Total ... £287 15 0 The Engineers report on this matter was as follows : I, have to report for your information, that the sum passed for Mr Crawford on account of contract 22, construction of road Heriot Hundred is £955 7s 6d, that boing the total amount due less 10 per cent, that being 90 per cent, of the work performed, instead of 80 per cent as per contract. With regard to the removal of the slip that took place, before the final inspection of the work, I have to state that is a condition of contract that during the execution of the works the formation and slopes shall be properly drained so as to prevent any lodgement of water, and should any slips occur either in the cuttings or embankments, the contractor must remedy them, and restore the slopes to the specified or a flatter rate of inclination. The amount kept in hand as'security for removal of slip, is to prevent no work performed, viz., £106 3s, deposit £46 11s, — total £152 14s, which will not be too much if there are 3000 cubic yards of stuff to be removed. — I have the honor to be, &c>, William Smaill, Engineer.
