TIMARU RACES.

The remissness of 'the telegraph agent in not telegraphing the results of the Timaru races is unpardonable. The following account of the principal events ©f the meeting we take from tbe ffasetifc,--.

Hurdle Back of t6O. Weight Ifor. ag«. Distance two miles, over eight flights of 'hurdles. For this race there were three entries-* Maid of the Mill, Tatnbourini,' and Sir Tatton. 'Shortly before the hour appointed for the start for the first race, it became known that Maid of the Mill and Tambourini were scratched, and consequently, when the bell rang, Sir Tatton had the course to himself, and walked over. Timaeu Cirp of L7O. Weight for age. Distance two and a quarter miles. Mr Denitt'sb gT»m>ourini - (Owner) 1 Mr Derritt's b m Hatred - (Taylor) 2 The race was one of the best of the day, and carried considerable interest. There were four horses entered, viz., Tambourini, Hatred, Hurricane, aud Hector. The latter horse took the lead at the start, but Hatred soon outstipped him, Hector taking the second place, with Hurricane third, and Tambouriui following last. These positions were, however, only kept for a short time, when Hatred took the lead, Tambourini. second, and Hurricane third. Then followed a good race between Hatred and Tambeurini for the first place ; when near the close, however, Tambourini passed his antagonist, and came in first. Time— 4 mm. 34 sec. Betting— Even on Tambourini, 6 to 4 against Hatred, 3 to 1 Hurricane, and 3 to 1 Hector. South Canterbury Handicap of L6O. Distance, one and three-quarter miles. Mr Derritt's b m Hatred - - (Owner) 1 Mr Derritt's bg Tambourini - (Taylor) 2 Four horses started for this race, which was the great event of the season, Mr Delamain's Miss Flat being scratched, and as might have b^en anticipated from the well known qualities of each of the horses, it was a most excitipg one. On the fall of the flag, HurrU cane took the lead, Tambourini second* Shadow third, followed by Hatred last; 'Tambourini after took the lead, and Hatred, making a good spurt, rapidly gained ahead, with Shadow last. A capital race ensued between Hatred and Tambourini, when on reaching the winning post Hatred was first, and Tambourini second. Hurricane third, and Shadow fourth. Time, 3min. 24secs. Betting :2to 1 against Tambourini ; sto 2 against Hatred ; 4 to 1 against Shadow ; and 4Jo 1 against Hurricane. Handicap Hurdle Back (second day) of L? 5. Distance, two miles ; over eight flights of hurdles. Mr Taylor's eh g Sir Tatton - (Williams) 1 M*r Patterson's b m Maid of the Mill *f (Tanner) 2 • For this race, which was a most exciting one, three horses startel, Sir Tatton leading, closely followed by Maid of the Mill and Sam Slick. Sir Tatton went over the first flight of hurdles ahead of the others,* Sam iSlick second, and Maid of the Mill last. Before coming to the next flight of hurdles they changed their position, Sir Tatton still being first, and Bam Slick and Maid of the Mill neck and neck. At the third hurdles i Sir Tatton and Maid of the Mill went over together, Sam Slick losing ground. At the j next flight of hurdles the rider of Sam Slick fell from his horse, and tbe race was j then between Sir Tatton and Maid of the Mill- On approaching the straight both j horses had their favorites ; but Sir Tnlion still kept the lead, and cleared the last hurdle first, Maid of the Mill following. On passing the grand stand, the rider of Sir J Tatton received quite an ovation of cheers. Time, 4min. s^ecs.
