DEEP STEEAM ANNUAL EACES.

The above meeting took place on Thursday and Friday last. The weather was unexceptionably fine both days, but the attendance was not up to the mark. In 23 years more than a million of population has been added to the city of London, without including the suburban towns swallowed up in the course of the city's expansion on all sides. In the same time 250,000 houses of all kinds have been built, aud the beats of the police have been extended 1,130 miles. 80,000 policemen are now employed regularly — a standing army more effective and better paid than any equal number since the days of the Praetorians of Rome ; and these are, on extraordinary occasions, assisted by the guards and household regiments of the Queen.
