THE MILLERS FLAT BLOCK.

(To tlie Editor.)

Sir, — In your isaue of the 18! h ulfc., appears a letter from an individual sig ling himself " A r l oiler," Welshmans Bench, which is a complete fabrication of falsehoods from beginning to end. The writer of this and other scurrilous letters that emanate from the same pen are better known that trusted m this quarter, and his communications to the press would tend to injure the district were we not eonverstnt with the writer. Why not give his true signature like a man 1 but I regret to say that he lacks those principles. Probably "A Toiler" may be labouring under a mistake. A petition has bean going the round of the district lately (and not before it was wanted) for the removal of the postoffice. I am not ashamed to acknowledge that 1 went round with that petition. So that I trust "A Toiler" will tind out his mistake. — I am, <fee, Jami:s Thompson, Overseer. Millers Flat, May 23.

(To the Editor )

Sir, -Would you kindly give place to the following statement in your valuable journal : — We, the under-signed inhabitants of Welshmans Beach, do hereby certify that no attempt has been made, either by petition or otherwise, to get our signatures for the withdrawal of the block of land on Miller and Henderson's run ; neither have the runholder3 ever asked us to remove our cattle. We wish for the future " A Toiler," who writes in your paper of the 18th inst., would toil a little harder, and mind his own business, instead of endeavouring to do us an injury. We may further add that we alwjys met with great kindness from the nmholders, Messrs Miller anil Henderson, and their oveisuer, Mr. Thompson. — We are, &c, Duncan M'Rae John Kerb, Timothy Shebht Patrick Lardnbr Stuart Duke John Eady Samuel Grogan Welshmans Beach, May 22.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, — In your paper of the 18th inst., I find a letter signed "A Toiler," Welshmans Beach, about a block of land on Millers Flat. In justice to the squatter, as weli as the miner, T think there was no " clummyism " connected with the said block, as " A Toiler " would lead us to understand. The transactions connected with this block were fair and above board. I cannot possibly understand what the writer is driving at, but this I do know, that he is endeavouring to breed a 'Teat deal of mischief between the runholders, settlers and miners, who, up till now, have all along been on the very best of terms, and were always ready to aive and get favours from each other, aud live as Christians ought to do ; but I trust that one or two Judases in our midst may not be the means of npsettinor the good feeling that has all along existed amongst us. It appears to me that "A Toiler*" is one of those narrowmined individuals who, it would appear, judges others by his own acts. He also attacks a gentleman who has lately settled amongst us, and, I may say, that from the short time he has been in this quarter he has gained very great respect, unless it may be by a similar individual to " A Toiler," who really cannot be expected to appreciate talent, or one. that would assist to forward the general interest of the district. As to the " famed edict which has compelled the settlers to sign a petitiou," &c. : now, Mr Editor, greater bosh could not be written by any sane man. It must surely be a fancy dream of the writer. The settlers have never been asked as yet to seek pasturage for their cattle elsewhere ; neither have the residents been ever asked to sign the said petition. Apologising for trespassing on your valuable space, but out of justice to myself and fellow settlers, T must ask you to be kind enough to publish this epistle. — T am, &c. A Resident. i Miller* Flat, May 22
