BIG SAVING TO NATION.
Result of Research in Industry. CHEAPER METHODS. LONDON, May 12. Wavs and means of dealing with some'of life’s little worries have resulted from the grant of £1,000,000 which the British Government made lb years ago for the encouragement of industrial research. The grant, which was used by the Department of Scientific Research for assisting the formation of co-operative research associations in various industries, was exhausted last year, and the department’s grants are now being made from its Parliamentary vote. The report of the Advisory Council of the Department, signed by Lord Rutherford, and just issued, surveys the research work, and shows it will - result in a saving to British industries ’ alone of £3,000,000. The accomplishments include: t Annual savings amounting to £1,000,000 per annum had accrued from ret search work in the electrical industry costing £BO,OOO in all. A saving of about £392.000 worth of coke per annum in the production of pig-iron, and a saving in coal of £1,341,000 in the production of finished : steel. Among problems that have been, or would shortly be, overcome were: L Better means of warming a house. The bursting of water pipes through . frost. . The corrosion of galvanised hot-water tanks. “ Tickling ” in woollen underclothes. • Holes in collars. In regard to the last-named object, certain manufacturers had agreed to . submit new fabrics, before putting them on the market, to the Launderers’ Research Association for examination with the object of obtaining a certificate of “ launderability.”
