To improve street lighting in Christ- j church, the sum of £lßl2 will be spent j bv the Christchurch City Council, I which at its meeting last, night | adopted the recommendations of the Finance Committee in this matrer. During the course of the debate on the proposals, Councillor J. S. Barnett characterised the proposed expenditure on Riccarton Avenue as “ wilful extravagance.” but Councillor 11. T. J. A report by the general manager of : the Municipal Electricity Department : stated that the proposed expenditure 1 of £1047 would be an annual charge The 145 lamps (100 c.p. changed to 250 c.p ) proposed for main thoroughfares included the following: Papariui j Road, from Bealev Avenue to Papanui. ; 37; Colombo Street South, Brougham | Street to Ileathcote River, 21; Ferry j Road, Fitzgerald .‘Avenue to Ileathcote , River, 51; Lincoln Road, Moorhouse Avenue to city boundary, 26; contingencies, 10. Councillor T. Milliken said that lie was opposed to the annual c‘ rge of £384 for the installation of the gaseous discharge lamps in Riccarton Avenue Reports submitted by the general manager of the Municipal Electricity Department had stated that these lamps were still in the experimental I stage. In addition to the annual • charge of £3S4, the cost of installing I the lamps would be about £6OO, and ! the lighting would not be of benefit to ! many residents of the city. Councillor T. 11. Butterfield expressed the opinion that the new lamps should be in Cathedral Square instead of Riccarton Avenue. Councillor M. E. Lyons said that it j was very largely a technical matter, and the council had to be guided by its officers. He urged the council to be a little progressive.
