In the British amateur golf championship at Prestwick, the first-round winners include the following;— Moreland beat Ouimet, 1 up. Fischer beat Graham Patrick, 4 up and 3. M’Lean beat Cowan, 2 up and 1. Jesse Guilford beat Howell, 2 up and 1. Cyril Tolley beat M’Master, 3 up and 1. J. Wallace beat Chandler Egan, 4 up and 3. R. WetJiered beat 11. M’Gloin, jun., 5 up and 4. Westland beat R. Harris at the twenty-first. William Breault beat Hamilton Gibbs, 5 up and 4. Dunlap beat Pakenham-Walsh at the twenty-second. D. H. R. Martin beat Marston, 2 up and 1. A. J. Peech beat Vanarsdale, 4 up and 3. Fiddian beat Stark, 4 up and 3. Torrance beat Ruth -rford, 2 up and 1. M’Ruvie beat Liddell, 4 up and 3. Dr Carew Nott beat J. Woollam at the nineteenth. The most amazing match at Prestwick was the victory of Dunlap, who played a dozen holes indifferently. His opponent, Pakenham-Walsh, who is ex-champion of India and an ex-Oxford Blue, reached the comfortable position of dormie five. The gallery of 5000 expected the match to end at every hiole, but Walsh had such an attack of nerves that he missed a short putt for victory on nearly every green, while Dunlap found top form and played the last nine holes of the match in par figures. Gus Moreland only just defeated Frances Ouimet, who was three up at the turn. Moreland’s round of 72 was the best of the day. Woollam never found normal form against Dr Carew Nott. The match was much hampered by the crowds. Woollam lost by taking three putts on the twenty-second after Dr Carew Nott had pitched dead from the bunker. Dr Carew Nott is an Australian
