BASKETBALL NOTES.

(By “GOALIE.”) The grounds at South Hagley Park were in a damp state on Saturday; in fact, one court had to be abandoned on account of a pool of water just at the goal base. The greasy state of the field slowed up the games considerably, and consequently play was not brilliant. To date few teams have entered for the tournament on June 4. Captains are reminded that entries close next Saturday. Only four A grade matches were plaved on Saturday. Varsity B defaulted to Merivale A, but Varsity A and Cathedral will play their match later in the season. Malreliau A and Beckenham A both had byes. Despite the fact that United and Digby’s warmed up a little when they became used to the tricky nature of the ground, the match was disappointing. A bright spot was the work of Olive Wheatly, who again proved an effective foil for Nancy Betts in goal. Despite the absence of Stella Wigmore, the third of this prac-tsied trio, United’s goal score mounted steadily. Score:— United IS, Digby’s 7. . Beckenham A and Technical A turned on a faster game, both teams putting their best into the play. Beckenham are not showing as much promise as they did earlier in the season. They indulged in some long passing which cost them dear. This fault, combined with Technical’s excellent goal-throw-ing, lost them the match by a big margin. Score; Technical 16, Beckenham 5. There was a keen struggle for supremacy between ABC and Waiata. The teams were fairly evenly matched, and both took full advantage of the conditions ruling. ABC have an excellent goal combination. Score: ABC 13, Waist Mary's, who have entered a particularly strong team this year, had a hard match against Ngaio, who are justifying their inclusion in the A grade. Score: St Mary’s 0, Ngaio 7.
