ASSISTANCE SOUGHT.
Relief Workers’ League Competition. A request for assistance in the formation of relief workers’ League teams was made last evening by Mr R. F. Bennet, honorary secretary to the Relief Workers’ League Centre, who attended a meeting of the League executive. He declared that the Rugby Union was opposing the formation of relief workers’ League teams, and suggested that club delegates should ask their unemployed members to turn out for the new teams, thus strengthening the code in Canterbury. ’’ We are meeting with much opposition from the Rugby Union and are finding it hard to field players who have, in the past, taken part in Rugby,” said Mr Bennet, in a letter written to the executive. ”It is apparent that the decision of the Rugby Union that any player taking part in the mid-week League games cannot play Rugby on Saturday has stifled football as fur as the League is concerned.” When the letter was received Mr W. S. E. Moyle, the chairman, said it was not. for the League to discuss the decisions of another code. Actually the League could not control the relief workers’ mid-week matches, for the executive controlled Saturday play only. The League, however, was sympathetic towards the relief workers, and all should be glad to assist them in their desire to play the code.
