“LET’S FALL IN LOVE.”
New Star Makes Debut at Crystal Palace. Catchy melodies and a delightful story form the nucleus of “ Let’s Fall in Love,” which began its Christchurch season at the Crystal Palace Theatre on Saturday. For wholesome entertainment, pleasant to the most critical and delightful to the keen picture patron, it would be difficult to find anything to excel this screen play. Ann Sothern and Edmund Lowe are the principals, Columbia is the maker, and the music is by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler. The story is one of those simple ones concerning a deception which turns out well for everyone in the long run. A Swedish star became so temperamental in Hollywood that
she refused to carry on with a new' film. A Swedish star was essential, but could not be found. The producer was at his wits end and, after a visit to a circus has an inspiration. He decides to make a star out of the circus ticket-seller. The scheme works well, up to a point, but a jealous fiance denounces the new' “ star,” and the 1934 Swedish w'onder departs to rejoin her circus. This is as far as such a scheme would go in real life, but a romantic twist is given the story at this stage, and the new “ star ” finds greater happiness and fame in an unexpected manner. Ann Sothern and Edmund Lowe share the honours. It is a long time since a new sta* of such ability as Ann Sothern has been seen, but she seems to have all the qualities to ensure a long career in moving pictures. She has a voice which is outstanding, and the songs which have been provided for her could not have been bettered. “ Let’s Fall in Love ” is the main item she sings, and it proved acceptable to Saturday’s audience. All the songs have catchy tunes which remain in the memory. Edmund Lowe plays his part in a tactful way. He is never too obstrusive, but without him, the enjoyment of the picture would be lacking. Interesting “ shorts ” complete the programme.
