Nominations tor the Greymouth Jockey Club's meeting on June 9 close at 9 p.m. on Saturday. * * * * Handicaps for the first day of the Dunedin winter meet.ng are due tomorrow. m * * * Handicaps foi the minor events on the first day of the Auckland winter meeting are due to morrow. Acceptances for thc»e races. also foi the Great Northern Hurdle Race and Steeplechase and Cornwall Handicap close at 5 p rrv on F riday. * * * * The well known West Coast performer, Coll, is reported to have been acquired by a Christchurch owner with a view to racing over hurdles. VOTTRE GAINS OXK, One win at Ashburton to L. J. EU»s and two at the Rangitikei meeting to K Voitre made the margin between them five. The totals are.—Ellis <6, Voitre 71. HAS WON OVER £2OOO

Water Power passed the £2OOO mark as a stake-earner with her winning double at Ashburton on Saturday. She is now six years old and began racing as a two-year-old. In all, she has started 95 times for 16 wins, M seconds, 11 thirds, and 56 times unplaced. In prize money she has won £2026. Water Power concluded each of the last two seasons by winning the Claremont Handicap at Washdyke in July. Fate has seen to it that she is particularly well named as she is at her best when rain has taken the sting out of the ground. Mr L. C. Hazlett bred Water Power, who is by the Tetrarch horse, Tractor from Charybdis by Downshire (son of Ayrshire) from Whirlpool by St George (son of Yattendon) from Watersprite (dam of Stonyhurst) by Uraducer. As at Invercargill the previous week, Water Power put in a remarkable finishing effort in each oi her races at Ashburton. L. J. Ellis on Royal Amphora looked surprised when Water Power raced past like a Schneider Cup machine. lIIS MAIDEN WIN. Elgindale, winner of the Trial Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday, had only once previously been placed. As a two-year-old, he raced five times all unplaced. Last season he began with three more unplaced .efforts and then finished third to Shamfight and Palantua, each of the three carrying 8.7, in the Spring Stakes at Washdyke. That was in October, 1932, and he did not race again until March 23 of this 3'ear, when he finished sixth in the Trial won by Red Dance. Evidently, Elgindale has shown his party something in the interim for he wound up favourite on Saturday. Last season, he raced in the ownership of Messrs Gittens and Lucas, but now runs in the nomination of Mr G. Lucas. INTERESTING BREEDING. Mr Gaine Carrington, who imported Hunting Song, bred Elgindale at Gainsville, Gisborne. Elgindale is bv Shambles from Bachelor’s Valley, an English mare by Gainsborough. Shambles is by Phalaris, a son of Polymelus, whose dam, Maid Marian, ‘ vas by Hampton. Gainsborough is ‘’v Bayardo, who was by Bay Ronald *. son of Hampton. Again Shambles is i-t of Fluff, whose dam Trenton Queen .as by Trenton. Gainsborough .s out of Rosedrop, whose dam Rosaline, was by Trenton. Elgindale is a half-brother to Bachelor’s Idol, a winner in the South. Their dam, Bachelor’s Picture, who was bred in England in 1922, is descended from Duchess, by Alexander, whose ancestress was Sir John Sebright’s Arabian mare from a family that was not numbered by Bruce Lowe or Hermann Goos.

HAS PAID HIS WAV. Since going into the stable of C. M’Carthy last October. Drumfire has earned £285. He won at Rangiora on the day that his purchase from Sir Charles Clifford was completed, and has scored twice since. Punters who supported him at Amberley and missed him at Ashburton will not be feeling too kindly towards the son of Winning Hit and Scrimmage. WASH DYKE PENALTIES. By his win at Ashburton, Elgindale is now ineligible for the Claremont Stakes, to be run at Washdyke next Saturday. Penalties allotted to other Ashburton winners engaged at the South Canterbury meeting are:—Haere Tonu Sib extra in the Kingsdown Handicap, making his weight 8.12; Water Power 111 b extra in the South Canterbury Handicap, making her weight 9.6. M’AULAV’S TWELFTH WIN. A. M’Aulay’s stable shelters no Nightmarch these days, but this trainer has, r.one the less, had quite a fair season. His charges have won twelve races, run eleven seconds and as many thirds. In prize money they have earned £2566 among them. Haere Tonu has so far been a difficult horse to condition, but he might easily prove very useful as a four-year-old. lie certainly has the breeding, as he is by Hunting Song from the Martian mare Martianette, a half-sister to Oratress, dam of Oratrix and Concentrate. Haere Tonu is a half-brother to Martian Chief. His success in the Fairfield Hack Handicap was his second win. His first was gained in the Nile Trial at Trentham in October, when he was followed home by Pheon and Copyist. To date he has earned £235, and, as he cost 425 guineas as a yearling, he still has some way to go before he shows his owner, Mr A. Louisson, a profit.

The Feilding Jockey Club has decided to drop the Feilding Stakes. At its next spring meeting a two-year-old handicap will replace the stakes. * * * * ON A HIGHER SCALE. Trainer P. M’Grath w&s very dissatisfied with the weights allotted to Cleaner and Red Dance at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting next Saturday, and promptly scratched them for their races. In the mile and a quarter South Canterbury Handicap Cleaner was allotted 8.6. She had 7.7 in the similar Ashburton Handicap on Saturday, but if she is up 131 b so are also Chrysology, Water Power and Quietly, three of her opponents on Saturday. Of the Ashburton field, the one better off at Washdyke is Wise Choice, who has only 41b more to carry next Saturday. In the Kingsdown Handicap next Satu-day Red Dance was allotted £.B. She had 8.7 in the Fairfield Handicap m Ashburton. Ten of her opponents on Saturday are also engaged in the Kingsdown. Of these Silver Lignt. Tout le Monde, Haere Tonu, Grand Review and Sibella were each given lib more, while the others have the same imposts as they carried at Ashburton. MAKE UP IMPROVES. Make Up disappointed badly when favourite for the Wanganui Steeplechase on May 12, but he won the King Country Steeplechase at Te Rapa on Saturday, when he ranked as 6-8 on the machines. He had 11.13 on his back. In both the Great Northern Hurdle Race and Steeplechase he has 11.8, and he meets Simeon, the runner-up, on better terms in the Ellerslie ’chase. A comparison of the weights in the King Country and Great Northern Steeplechases is:—

MORE ELLERSLIE CANDIDATES. Manuiri, who won the Rangitoto Steeplechase at the Rangitikei meeting on Saturday, is engaged in the Great Northern Steeplechase at 9.4. He carried a stone more at Bulls. Cargen, winner, with 9.3, of the Te Kuiti Hurdle race at Te Rapa on Saturday, has 9.0 in the Great Northern Hurdle race. Prince Colossus, who was successful in the President’s Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Te Rapa, with 7.11, is engaged in the Auckland Cornwall Handicap at 7.0 and meets both Caliente and L’Allegro, second and third to him on Saturday, on Sib better terms. * * * * New Zealand-bred Ephialtes is now being tried over hurdles in Sydney, and is said to show some promise. DUNEDIN ENTRIES. The Riccarton horses nominated for the Dunedin winter meeting are; Fairway, Quietly, Colossian, Strong Light, Fleeting Glance, Royal Limond, Rational 11., Royal Amphora, Cleaner, Tout le Monde, Drumfire, Red Dance, Star Raider, Silver Light and Scratchmere Scar. Other entrants include the New Zealand Cup winner Palantua, Silver Streak. Grand Finale, Rasouli, Ecclefechan, Membo, Dunmure, Quinopal, Palmary, Cherry Queen, Guarantee, Hurlingham, Water Power and Mobile. H. and A. Cutts, who usually have horses at the principal Wingatui fixtures, are not represented this time, but the stable is contemplating sending horses to the Auckland meeting, held at the same time. R. E. HATCH AS STARTER. Mr A. J. Hastings, who is the usual starter for the Ashburton County Racing Club, was officiating at Ilutt Park on Saturday, but an inter-island exchange was effected, as Mr R. E. Hatch came down from Awapuni to act at Ashburton. Mr Hatch was in fine form, and it was just ill-luck that the only indifferent start came late in the day with the Flying Handicap, with one of the smallest fields. The horses were in line, but as the barrier was released Final Shot backed out and Fairway swung round. Mr Hatch will be in Christchurch again on June 6, en route to Greymouth, in order to act as starter at Omoto on June 9.

SOLID TOTE DECREASE:. Very mixed are the results attending the chopping and changing in betting systems. Switching from win and place to the old single pool system, the Ashburton County Racing Club found its totalisator aggregate down from £7672 to £5430. Whether the change in the system had much to do with the decrease is one of those matters very difficult to determine. The weather in Christchurch on the days preceding the meeting was enough to make most people shy about doing 100 miles’ travelling for a race meeting. Also, the special meeting at Hutt Park drew away trotting support. The club had done its best to assure Christchurch folk that Ashburton had missed the storm, but probably there were plenty of “ doubting Thomases.” The course was in good order, and the only rain that fell was in two brief light showers. WEST COAST AND DUNEDIN. It looks as if the Dunedin winter meeting may possess special interest for the West Coast. Giggleswick and Knocklong. two well-known ('oast performers, have each been nominated for several events, while among the Riccarton entrants are Drumfire, Silver Sight, Fleeting Glance and Rational 11., all of whom are owned on the Coast.
