WET DAY WORK.
Conference to Discuss Case of Relief Workers.
Exception to the attitude of the Unemployment Board in regard to wetday conditions for relief workers was expressed at a meeting of the Christchurch Citizens’ Unemployment Relief Committee this morning. In reply to a recent resolution by the committee, the board wrote stating that it could not agree to the proposal that men should not report on the job on wet days, and it could give no further concessions in the matter. It was decided to call a conference of. local body and committee representatives for Monday next at 11 a.m. to discuss the position. Mr W. J. Walter said that the reply meant that the committee’s recommendation had been ignored. He moved that the board should again be written to suggesting that if it was wet between 7 and 8 a.m. men should not be required to report on relief jobs, and should be paid for the lost day. Mr J. W. Crampton seconded the motion. Mr R. T. Bailey said that the recent local bodies’ conference had decided that men reporting for work on wet days should be given 50 per cent time and required to make up 50 per cent. Mr W. E. Leadley moved as an amendment that a conference of local employing bodies of No. 5 scheme workers should be called to reconoider the previous decision over wet days. Mr J. S. Barnett seconded the amendment. Mr Walters withdrew his motion, and the amendment was carried.
