ASHBURTON NEWS.
Address on Missionary Work. (Special to the " Star.”) ASHBURTON, April 19. The depleted state of the missionary funds of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand was referred to by Mr V. G. Chapman. Wellington (general treasurer of the Church) in an address to representatives of churches in the Ashburton Presbytery last evening. He stated that for the past five years there had been a deficiency in the contributions to the missionary activities of the Church and that the Advisory Board of the General Assembly of New Zealand had decided that if the deficiency continued considerable retrenchment would be inevitable. There had been a good response last year, however, and the budget had been balanced. Mr Chapman appealed for the maintenance of last year’s standard, at least, so that retrenchment by calling home to New Zealand missionaries -»•: present in foreign fields would not have to be undertaken. Address to Girls’ Club. Miss Bargrave, of the Church Missionary Society’s Hospital at Hangchow, China, gave an interesting address to the members of St Stephen's Girls’ Club and Sunday School teachers at the Vicarage last evening on the work of the mission. An exhibition of curios also created much interest. Lodge Me.ting. At a meeting of Hakatere Lodge, 1.0.0. F., held last evening, the N.G. (Br<T J. Arnst) presided. Two members were reported to be on the sick list. 1 wo candidates for membership were proposed, and P.G. Bro C. Hansen was appointed to give the P.G.’s degree next lodge night. The social committee reported that it had made arrangements for the season’s card evenings to commence on Thursday, April 26.
