Tour of Northern Portion of South Island. DEPUTATIONS AT KAIAPOI. The Main Highways Board arrived ,in Christchurch from Wellington this morning, and began its tour of the northern portion of the South Island. The members of the board taking part in the tour are Messrs C. J. M’Kenzie (chairman), J. Wood, C. J. Talbot and A. Morrison. Messrs G. W. Albertson (engineer), G. W. Knapp (secretary) and F. Langbein (District Public Works Engineer) are with the party. Two members of the Board, Messrs Sr. H. Wynyard (motorists’ representative) and J. J. Gibson (one of the Government representatives) are unable to make the tour. At Kajapoi the Mayor (the Rev W. H. A. Vickery) extended a welcome to the members of the board, and said that the Borough Council had three requests to make: (1) The declaration of Charles Street from the Post Office corner to Tuahiwi Road as a secondary highway; (2) the widening and sealing of the main bridge at Kaiapoi; (3) the installation of a warning sig nal at night at the High Street rail way crossing. Mr M’Kenzie said that the board would give the council’s requests every consideration. The main bridge was not condemned but was not considered safe to carry the extra weight of sealing. He suggested that an estimate should be obtained of the cost of a new bridge. The board recognised that the railway crossing was very dangerous. Eyre County. Mr F. L. Parnham, on behalf of the Eyre County Council, asked the board to consider: (I) The question of bitumen shoulders on the concrete road between the new Waimakariri bridge and Kaiapoi; (2) the declaration of the Tram Road from Clarkville to Mandeville as a secondary highway and the deviation of a portion of the road at Ohapuku; (3) the widening of the Mill Stream bridge. Mr M’Kenzie replied that the board would give favourable consideration to the construction of bitumen shoulders oil the main road. He considered that th 6 widening of the Mill Stream bridge was also a necessary work. It was hoped that the board would have more money at its disposal this year, and would be able to undertake necessary works. With reference to the Tram Road being declared a secondary highway, and the proposed deviation, he suggested that a plan be prepared and sent up to the board.
