OVERNIGHT ITEMS.

The flood gate and bridge which is being erected across the Styx River at Brooklands should be finished in about three months, and when that is done Christchurch residents will have another fine motor drive available It will be possible to go from New Brighton out through Marshland and Brooklands, over the bridge, and back by the Stewart’s Gully Road to the Main North Road. The threemonth prediction was made when members of the Waimakariri River Trust, which is carrying out the work, visited the bridge in the course of their annual inspection yesterday. The board members present at the inspection were Mr J. H. Blackwell (chairman). Professor R. Speight, Messrs F. W. Freeman. A. Manhire, W. P. Spencer, J. Leslie. R. O. Dixon and H. E. Evans, with Messrs H. W. Harris (engineer), C. W. Ilervey (secretary) and T. Jeal (works superintendent). The trust also inspected the ford near Belfast, at the spot used in summer for a bathing pool, which the Eyre Council requests should be bridged to allow a shorter outlet from Coutts Island. The erection of a bridge would cut off seven miles on a journey from the island and back again. A forty-foot span would be required.

At the monthly meeting of the Richmond Burgesses’ Association the secretary read two letters from the Town Clerk with reference to subjects placed before him by the association. Concerning a request that a footbridge be constructed over the Avon in the vicinity of the weir, the Town Clerk advised that, as the cost of the bridge would amount to £l6O and there was not sufficient money on the estimates it had been decided to hold it over until the estimates were being prepared. A similar reply was received in connection with the widening of Stanmore Road.

A complaint received from the Woolston Ratepayers’ Association about the discharge into the Ileathcote River from the Davis Gelatine Co.’s works was recently investigated by the Works Committee of the Christchurch Drainage Board. Members of the committee visited the works of the Woolston Tanneries, the Davis Gelatine Co. and G. L. Bowron and Co. In view of the definite assurance being given by the firms that steps would immediately be taken to comply with the requirements, the committee recommended to the board at its meeting last night that no action should be taken. The report was adopted.
