One in Every 7.3 Deaths Due to Disease. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. CANBERRA, April 16. When officially opening the fifth annual Cancer Conference, Mr James Guy, acting Federal Minister of Health, declared that in the past five years 11,500 cases of cancer had been treated with radium. Of 3071 cases operable for cancer but treated with radium during the past five years, 62 per cent, he said, were j known to be free of symptoms, while j only 4 per cent were known to have j died. However, continued Mr Guy, in j spite of the vigorous campaign against j cancer, the mortality rate had increased ; considerably until one in every 7.3 j deaths was attributable to that disease. ! The Commonwealth Government, he said, in the past seven years had spent £153,000 on cancer control. Several New Zealand delegates are attending the conference.
