for the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting close on Friday at 5 p.m. * sic * sic Nominations for the trotting events at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting close at 5 p.m. on Friday. * * * * SMITH'S BIG LEAD. By scoring four wins, including a head-heat at Thames on Saturday, the Takanini trainer, F. J. Smith, increased his total of winning drives this season to thirty-nine. He is nineteen ahead of C. S. Donald, who is second on the list. * * * * Gold Standard is a good type of a four-vear-old trotter, but he did not leave the mark in his race at Ashburton. He is by Nelson Bingen from L’luvia de Oro, and when R. Townley straightens him out he should win races. LOSING ON A WINNER, When Donum ran his dead-heat for first with Smooger in the Kopu Handicap at Thames on Saturday he was favourite both ways. His supporters on the win machine showed a slight loss on their investments. Win Thru trotted a solid race in the Allenton Handicap at Ashburton He took charge soon after going four furlongs and led into the straight. He stuck to his work in the final struggle and finished a creditable third. Win Thru is an aged gelding by Guy Parrish from a mare by Rev de Oro. He is trained by A. Candy at Addington. TROPHIES WON. After the Thames Trotting Cup contest on Saturday the silver cup was presented by Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P.. to Mr H. L. Lovegrove, part-owner of Worthy Light. The winning driver, F. J. Smith, received a gold-mounted whip donated by A. Kohn, Limited. A j bracelet for the lady nominee of the winner of the Turua Bracelet Handicap was received from Mr J. W. M’Kendrick by Mrs F. J. Smith, on behalf of Mrs J. Lloyd, of Hastings The winner, Le Chenault, is owned by Mr H. J. Lloyd and is trained by F. J. Smith. Mr J. Twohill, president of the club, announced that a bracelet race would be placed on the programme again next year * ' * * * Night trotting meetings are now being held in Adelaide. J worthy QUEEN. J Worthy Queen, who made history at Addington yesterday, when she covered ! a mile in 2min 3 3-osec, establishing a [ New' Zealand record for a trotter, was | bred in 1927 by Mr J. R. Corrigan, of | Hawera, and she is raced on lease by i the Addington trainer, J. S. Shaw;, who | deserves all, the credit for the great : progress the mare has made. She is by Worthy Bingen, a brother to Great Bingen and Peter Bingen, by Nelson Bingen from Berthabell, an American importation, by Peter the Great. Queen ; Chimes, the dam of Worthy Queen, is | by the Abbey Bells horse, Coldstream ! Bells, from Vanquish, an Australian- ; bred mare by Vancleve. Queen Chimes was bred at Fendalton by Mrs M. Duncan and as a yearling she was purchased by Mr R. K. Thompson, prior to leaving for the Great War. He left the fillv in charge of his brother, Mr T. J. Tompson, of this city, who placed her in the hands of J. Bryce, at Oakhampton Lodge. In the ownership of Mr Thompson she was started in two races, as a three-year-old, finishing second at Kurow and third at Oamaru. Shortly afterwards Mr Thompson sold her, on behalf of his brother, to Mr J. R. Corrigan for £350 The same season in her new ownership, she accomplished a notable feat as a classic winner. On Easter Saturday she won the Champion Stakes at Addington. She was shipped north the same night, travelling on Sunday by float from Wellington to Wanganui and going on by train to Hawera on the following day, to win the Taranaki Derby. Earlier in the season she had run second to President in the Great Northern Derby. Worthy Queen has gradually worked her way to the leading position among the trotters and at Addington, early this month, she gave a glimpse of her class by winning a mile and a half race, from 108yds behind, in 3min 15 3-ssec, while on the second day of the meeting she won in 3min 14 l-ssec.
