Y.W.C.A. FETE.

Folk Dancing Held at Bishopscourt. UNUSUAL ENTERTAINMENT. Folk-dancing and various other forms of physical culture were displayed by the YAV.C.A. at its fete held in the grounds of Bishopscourt on Saturday afternoon, when a large crowd of guests was entertained throughout the afternoon with colourful spectacles of dancing girls or athletic members of the Y.M.C.A. performing feats on horizontal bars or a . wooden horse. The girl citizens cf the \. W.C.A. performed some intricate maypole dances, fascinating to watch, the Welsh, Irish, Scottish or English costumes worn by the girls providing a striking picture Five folk dancing teams were entered in the competition, which was judged by Misses Millicent Kennedy and Miss Munro. The team from the School for the Deal, Sumner, were the winners. Pupils of the West Christchurch District High School did some pretty country dances, and a squad of Y. W.C.A. girls, not to be outdone by the men, gave a drill display. Altogether, the sum of about £26 was raised as a result of the fete, but out of this amount certain expenses have still to be met. In welcoming the guests Mrs Murdoch M’Leod spoke of the kindness of Bishop and Mrs West-Watson in lending them the grounds and also of their generosity and co-operation in making arrangements for the fete. Mrs W. Machin, president of the Y.W.C.A., was unable to be present, as she is away from Christchurch.

There were other amusing competitions in plenty. Misses Helen Bretherton and Betty Neave were in charge of the clock golf, which was won by Mr M. M’Leod, and Mrs Ambridge won the croquet games organised by Mrs E. D. Mosley. Winners of other competitions were: Nail-driving, Mr Brittenden; dart-throwing, Miss Rhodesguessing the weight of a cake, Mrs a’. G. Lyttle; doll competition, Miss Millicent Kennedy.

Paton, who were in charge of the tea arrangements, were assisted by a number of girl citizens. Other stalls were staffed as follows:—Mystery parcels. Mrs W. Paine and Miss Meredith-Kaye; bran tub, Mrs Wills and Mothers’ Club members* sweets, members of senior girls’ finance committee; ice cream, Mrs W Paine.
