DICKENS FELLOWSHIP.
The first meeting this year of the Dickens Fellowship was held on Saturday evening. Mr K. A. Oaddick presided over h good attendance of members and friends.
Dickens’s little-known but severely criticised book, “ Hard Times,” was the subject of an interesting- paper read by the president He said that it was perhaps the writer’s weakest work, which had been criticised by Professor Leacock, who said that all the characters and scenes had been grossly exaggerated. The critic was unfair in his remarks, because in quoting from eminent writers’ opinions, he had used only the parts which supported his statements.
Mr Caddick briefly summarised the story and described the principal characters used by Dickens. He said that in “ Hard Times,” Dickens. as always, was in sympathy with the workers. At the conclusion of his address, Mr Caddick was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
