INTOXICATED DRIVER.
Heavy Penalty Imposed by Magistrate.
A fine of £2O and costs, in default two months’ imprisonment, was imposed on Robert Hugh Dixon, thirty years of age, of Colombo Street, who was charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-day with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car. Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., also cancelled his driving license and prohibited him from obtaining another until June 1, 1935. On a second charge, of resisting a constable, Dixon was convicted and discharged. Senior-Sergeant Fox said that at 10 p.m. on Sunday the accused was s-cen by two constables driving an erratic course down Manchester Street. He crossed the intersection of Hereford Street at. thirty-five miles an hour. The car stopped near the Civic Theatre, and when a constable went to arrest the accused, Dixon resisted violently. During the struggle a button was torn from the constable’s uniform. For the accused, Mr Quigley asked for leniency, stating that the whole trouble had been caused by the accused taking too much to drink. The Magistrate said that the sentence had been increased because of the way accused had resisted arrest.
