RUGBY SEASON.

Entries About Equal to Last Year. PLAY STARTS ON SATURDAY. The number of teams in the Canterbury Rugby Union's competitions this season will be practically the same as last year, when there were 108 playing teams. Entries closed on Saturday night with 113 teams entered in the various grades, and this figure will be lowered a little as the season progresses. Play begins next Saturday. Two clubs—Training .College and Sprevdon—have withdrawn from the competitions, but their place has been taken by New Brighton and Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Since the closing of the Training College, many former student players have joined the ranks of Varsity and other clubs. R.N.V.R. has entered one team, in the third grade, and New Brighton has third and sixth grade and under 16 (under 9st) teams entered. Training College formerly played second and third grade, and Spreydon fourth, fifth and under 18. The total entry in each grade is as follows: —First 8, second 13, third 18, fourth 20, fifth 19, sixth 13, under 18 8, under 16 7, under 16 (under 9st) 7. This gives a total of 113 teams. Fifty-four grounds are available for all these players. 23 of them being in City Council parks and 31 in Ilagley Park. Grade Entries. The following list shows the entries in the main grades:— Senior—Albion, Athletic, Christchurch, Old Boys. Linwood, Merivale, Sydenham, Varsity. Juniors—Albion, Athletic, Christchurch. Old Boys, Kaiapoi, Linwood, Merivale, North Canterbury, St Andrew’s Old Boys, Sunnyside, Sydenham, Technical Old Boys, Varsity. Third Grade—Albion, Athletic. Boys’ High School, Christchurch, Christ’s College, Old Boys, Linwood, Merivale, New Brighton, Old Collegians. Jticcarton, Richmond, R.N.V.R., St Bede’s, Sydenham, Technical Old Boys, Varsity, West Old Boys. Fourth Grade—Albion, Aranui, Athletic, Beckenham, Bromley, _ Christchurch, Old Boys, Kaiapoi, Linwood, Merivale, Marshland-Ouruhia, Old Collegians, Riccarton, Sumner, Sydenham, Technical Old Boys, Templeton. Varsity, West Old Boys, Y.M.C.A. Entries in the other grades are well maintained. Sydenham, with nine teams in, is the largest entrant. The club has senior, junior, third, fourth, fifth grade, under 18, under 16. and under 16 (under 9st) teams entered. Old Boys, Linwood and Technical Old Boys each have eight teams.
