SERIOUS SCALDS.
Child Fell Into Boiling Copper. A severe scalding, the result of falling into a copper of boiling water, was suffered by Jean Broadhurst. four years of age, of llighsted Road, Papanui, last evening. The child was taken to the Public Hospital by the St John Ambulance. Fall From Girder. Injuries to the head, arms and shoulder were sustained by Mr 11. Entwistle, of Studholme Street, who fell 30ft from a girder while working on the new State Fire building in Worcester Street yesterday afternoon. The injured man was conveyed to the Public Hospital by the St John Ambulance, and last evening his condition was reported to be satisfactory. Death of Maori Boy. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH. April 13. Ray Tupe. a Maori boy, aged seven died in the New Plymouth Hospital at .45 p.m.. having received a fracture of the skull when struck by a lorry on the main road north of Waitara at 3.15 p.m. The boy’s mother is also a patient at the hospital. Tupe was walking along the road with a European boy. They were carrying long strips of flax, which they vvere apparently waving at vehicles that passed. The lorry, owned by W. Scott, of Urenui, and driven by Ralph Grech, came past, and the driver saw the children. He continued his straight course. What happened then is not definitely known. Tupe apparently whipped the flax at the lorry, and either overbalanced or came too close, with the result that he was struck bv the floor of the lorry, which projects from the body. The driver was not aware that Tupe had been struck until a pedestrian further up the road drew .his attention. The boy was removed to the hospital, and died shortly after admission.
