POWERFUL DRAMA.
Brilliantly mounted, gorgeously costumed and setting a new standard for screen acting, “ Rasputin and the Empress,** began a return season at the Grand Theatre to-day. This is the film that caused the recent sensation in England when Princess Ilina Yousoupoff was awarded £25,000 damages in a libel action against the producers. The princess claimed £IOO,OOO from the M.G.M. Film Corporation, alleging that the character of Princess Natascha in the picture was so thinly veiled that people throughout the world recognised it as herself. A critic writes: Not only is “ Rasputin and the Empress ” dazzling because of the celebrated Barrymore trio, John, Ethel and Lionel, in their first joint appearance in films, but because of its tremendous scope, its gigantic reproductions of the magnificent ceremonials of the pre-war Russian dynasty, its powerful dramatic structure, and the side diversions of striking characterisations. Box plans at the D.I.C.
