BOXING.

Preparations for Coming Season. Preparations for the 1934 boxing season are well in hand, -*.cl indications are that the sport has embarked on an era of progress. In the past the game has been handicapped to a large extent through lack of contact between the various schools and the controlling body, the Christchurch Amateur Boxing and Sports Club. One of the first moves this year will be to establish a basis of co-operation. All instructors have been invited to attend a meeting to be held on March 27 for the purpose of di. cussing this question. The matter of judges will also come up for discussion, and allocations will be made for the various tournaments. The season will open with the University championships at the Choral Hall on March 31. This tournament will be followed on April 17 by a novice evening, and early in May a professional bout will be staged. Personal Note*. Jim VVatfon has a number of promising novices in training. The two amateurs, R. Lester and J. Lester, are also with him. and A. Bourne, who has now reached the weight of il.l, after fighting at 11.9 last season. A. Hawes has not yet resumed training. Jim Thomson has not started his gymnasium yet. He reports, however, that. G. Wright, the Zealand bantam -hampion. is fir and well and doing light work for prospective matches. Clarrie Flaynsr, the New Zealand feather-weight champion, wil! meet Donkin to-morrow, at Blenheim. The title is at stake, and P. Hawes i.-- challenging the winner to a bout in Christ.3l u ss<o n. and* K d die' *Fa! l” "a >• d ' Nor man Fisher are both keeping fit under his guidance. Joe Franklin added further laurel.? to his name by his defeat '.f Ted Oxley for the light-weight title.
