“TELL ME TO-NIGHT”
Great Musical Show in Third Week, The wonderful success which ** Tell Me To-night” has met v/ith overseas and in other New Zealand cities is being maintained in Christchurch, where this famous film began the third week of its season at the Civic Theatre to-day. A fact which speaks for its popularity is the great number of patrons who have returned two and three times to witness the attraction. To see and hear Jan Kiepura, the famous Polish tenor, is to experience the spell of a delightful personality, as well as a glorious voice. He is a great tenor, still so young that he lives in the sunshine of early popularity, yet mature enough to be acclaimed as one of the leading tenors of his time. Sonnie Hale, an inimitable London comedian, makes his first screen appearance and scores a personal triumph, while further comedy is admirably supplied by Edmund Gwenn (the Mayor) and Athene Seyler (the Mayoress), and as their daughter, Magda Schneider provides the charming romance. The story is pleasing, with all the romance that can be desired, and humour of the type that keeps one in ripples of laughter even after the show has finished. As for the music, it ranges from the most lilting of modern melodies to tuneful excerpts from grand opera. The story deals with the adventures of a noted tenor, who in an endeavour to escape from the merciless supervision of his female manager, runs away to a Swiss town, finds a train acquaintance (who turns out to be an international crook) to impersonate him, falls in love and becomes involved in all sorts of trouble, which is eventually straightened out. Magnificent Swiss lake scenery, clever comedy, sparkling romance and glorious singing all combine to make what has proved to be a record-break-ing film in all countries where it has been screened. Box plans are rapidly filling and Intending patrons are advised to make early reservations at the theatre, where the box plans are now open.
