RELIEF IN CHATHAMS.

Hospital Representative Appointed.

Reference to reports of distress in the Chatham Islands was made in the report of the benevolent committee which was before the North Canterbury Hospital Board to-day. The report stated that a letter had been received from the Director-General of Health covering reports sent to the Minister in reference to distress in the Chatham Islands. The first letter was dated August 6, and another one, received from another source, September 22. The first one was written when things were perhaps very much worse in the Islands owing to the fisheries having closed down. Another report, received by the board, indicated that with the opening of the fisheries the greater part of the need for assistance disappeared; but with a view’ to meeting any possible emergency, the committee had given authority to an Island resident representing- the board at Waitangi to issue orders for a limited amount of food to those cases whose need could be verified. The report was adopted.
