SNOW AND HAIL.

Southerly Snap in Canterbury.

Heavy showers of hail were experienced in Christchurch this morning, and in Spreydon and on the Cashmere Hills there was a slight fall of snow. The sou’-west wind which blew strongly all morning was bitterly cold. Frost Predicted. Mr F. L. Wooles predicts a frost during this evening. At this stage fruit is little likely to be affected, but tomatoes and beans may suffer if unprotected. The indications are that further showers will be experienced before the weather definitely clears. The rainfall up to nine o’clock was .19in. Farmers in North Canterbury welcomed the rain that fell yesterday, as their land had not had as much moisture as the rest of the province. W aipara grass and crops are in excellent order, but people digging postholes recently found dry soil eighteen inches below the surface. Therefore, the .75in recorded there this morning was very welcome. A slight frost was experienced at Ashburton this morning, potatoes and beans being blackened. Light showers fell during the morning, but J:he clouds were broken, and weather looked as though it would clear. The weather at Rangiora was squally, many heavy showers being experienced. The weather at Springfield was cold and overcast to-day. Snow fell on the mountains last night.
