The annual report of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association states that the present membership is 243. Resignations during the year are accounted for chiefly by pressure of economic conditions. The statement of accounts discloses a satisfactory state of affairs in view of the lower rates of interest on investments and the increasing difficulty in collecting subscriptions. With the necessity of a considerably higher contribution to the funds of the federation and financial support to the Ladies’ Auxiliary, it was found necessary to dispense with the organiser’s services in January. The saving thus effected, together with prompt acceptance of a levy by a considerable number of members, enabled the association to meet the year’s expense with only a small attack on last year’s “ carry forward.” The association is somewhat handicapped financially by having to earmark its Winter Show profits for the Canterbury Hall Company, but hopes that this may be a temporary difficulty only. The sense of touch in the finger will detect a Difference of half a degree Fahrenheit in temperature.
