PERSONAL.

Mr H. W. Townsend (Chicago) is staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., was an arrival from Wellington this morning. Mr W. Calder Mackay arrived from Wellington this morning. Major T. J. King, Director of Ordinance, arrived by the ferry steamer this morning.

Mr H. H. Sterling, chairman of the Railways Board, arrived from Wellington this morning. Messrs J. H. Russell (Wellington) and W. D. Smail (Auckland) are staying at Warner’s Hotel.

Messrs J. H. Russell, J. A. Pinnington,- J. C. Clark (Wellington), Calder Mackay and G. Western (Auckland) are guests at Warner’s Hotel.

Guests at the New City Hotel include Messrs J. B. Robertson and R. Wilson (Dunedin), A. J. Crhig, F. Ronaldson and J. M’lntosh (Wellington). The Right Rev W. R. Parpell, Bishop of the Morayian Church of New Zealand, arrived from the north this morning.

Mr S. R. Cowley, formerly of Christchurch, and now of Melbourne, who is a director of the Dominion Compressed Yeast Company, Ltd., is visiting Christchurch on business. He will leave for Wellington on Thursday night, and will return to Australia at an early date.

The secretary of the Spre>’don Burgesses’ Association has written to Mr D. Sykes conveying the association’s appreciation of the long and faithful service he has rendered to the district as its representative on the Tramway Board, and expressing regret that he is unable to seek re-election as a member of the board..

Colonel George Barcla3 r , who has been secretary of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand Freemasons for the past twelve years, will retire to-morrow at the conclusion of the annual communication,'which is being held at Dunedin. Colonel Barclay was originally an English Freemason, and his services to the Grand Lodge of England were recognised by the conferment upon him of the rank of Past Grand Deacon of England. He also holds the rank of Past Third Grand Principal of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of New Zealand, and that of Past Principal Grand Sojourner of the Grand Chapter of England. In the Grand Lodge of New Zealand Freemasons Colonel Barclay was Senior Grand Warden in 1911, and in 1920 he became Assistant Grand Secretary, succeeding to the Grand Secretaryship in 1921, on the retirement of Mr Malcolm Niccol.
