WORK ON FARMS.

Scheme for Boys Supported by Farmers’ Union. The North Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union met yesterday, Mr G. C. Warren (vice-president) in the chair. The chairman extended a welcome to Mr A. V. Baker, president of the Culverden branch, and to Mr Struthers, president of the North Otago Farmers’ Union Mutual Insurance Association. A report on the progress of the pig marketing scheme was given by Mr H. W. M’lntosh, who said that the prospects of the industry were particularly bright. A lengthy circular was received from the Christchurch Boys’ Employment Committee outlining a scheme for training boys in farming work, and appealing for financial assistance. Mr T. Thompson said that the scheme was worthy of assistance, and he would like to see the executive make a donation to the fund. The chairman said that the scheme was well sponsored. Mr H. W. MTntosh moved that the executive endorse the appeal and refer it to the branches with a recommendation that they support it. Mr D. J. Hawke said that for many 3’ears an endeavour had been made to give boys an agricultural bias. The difficulty to-day was to get boys with a desire for a farming life, and if the scheme would lead to that it would be well worth while The motion was carried. It was also decided to refer the appeal to the Finance Committee with a strong recommendation that it assist the scheme to the utmost of its ability. Stock Improvement Bill. A summary of the Stock Improvement Bill which is being promoted by the Royal Agricultural Society was received from Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane, president of the society. Several members expressed the opinion that the provisions in the Bill were too drastic, but others said that drastic measures were required for the improvement of stock. It was decided not to take any action in the matter until the precise terms of the Bill were available.
