Among the many botanical curiosities of Ceylon is a fruit supposed to bear the marks of Eve’s teeth. The tree on which it grows is known by the significant name of “Forbidden Fruit" or “ Eve’s Apple Tree.’’ The blossom is pleasantly scented, and the fruit is orange in colour outside and a deep crimson within. Each fruit has the peculiar appearance of having a piece bitten out of it. This fact, with its poisonous quality, led to the belief that it was the forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden.
