SAVING IN EXPENSE.

Triennial Election of Drainage Board.

With the object of saving the expense of preparing electoral rolls for districts in which there are no contests, the Drainage Board obtained legislative authority last year to close the nominations for its triennial elections sixty days before the date of the poll. This authority will be invoked for the first time in connection with the elections that are due to be held on the last Tuesday in January next, and it is probable that nominations will close on a date to be fixed in the first week in December. In previous elections nominations have closed only about a fortnight before the day of the poll, and the board has been under the necessity of printing twelve separate rolls. This year the Returning Officer will not make a start with the preparation of the rolls until after the nominations have closed, and there will be a saving of expense in cases where candidates are returned without opposition.

The board consists of twelve members, each of whom is returned fof a separate sub-district, and at the elections three years ago there were only five contests for seats. The sub-districts are,as follows:—North-west city, northeast city, south-west city, south-east city, St Albans, Linwood, Heathcote, Woolston, Sydenham, Spreydon, Riccarton and Avon (including New Brighton).
