MR HOOVER IN NEW YORK
Says Democratic Victory Means Stagnation.
United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK, October 31
In an effort to win New York’s fortyseven electoral votes President Hoover came to the- city to-night, after brief halts throughout the day at industrial centres in Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, -where he again emphasised the necessity of high tariffs.
Speaking at Madison Square Gardens, in New York City, Mr Hoover told a cheering crowd of 22,000 that the election of Mr -Frankl} r n Roosevelt, the Democratic candidate, would “ destroy the very foundation of the American economic and social system,” whereas his administration had overcome the depression through strict adherence to traditional principles. Mr Hoover spoke encouragingly of the improvements in the employment position and in business, and said that a Democratic victory would mean the lowering of the tariff and the complete stagnation of industry.
It was necessary to call up mounted police to handle the thousands who were unable to enter the Gardens. A small Communist protest demonstration was quickly dispersed.
