EXCELLENT SINGING.
Lawrence Tibbett Starred in “New Moon.” Seldom have motion picture theatre patrons been treated to such a wealth of fine singing as in the film, “New Moon ”, which is showing at Everybody's Theatre this week. The general reproduction of this musical operetta has been carried out with careful attention to detail and tone, and one of the most pleasing features is the clearness of the reproduction of the songs of Lawrence Tibbett and Grace Moore, who have the principal vocal and acting parts. Many of the songs from “ New Moon” have already become very popular with Christchurch audiences through the legitimate stage, and. especially in the case of Lawrence Tibbett, whose resonant voice is one to be remembered with pleasure, the film version does full justice to the excellence of the vocal efforts. Tibbett cuts a gallant figure in his defence of Fort Darvaz, a lonely outpost in the Caucasus where treacherous tribesmen have to be dealt with and it is by no means on singing alone that he graces one of the principal roles. His acting has about it a. freshness and spontaneity at once romantic and exhilarating, and in striking contrast to the suave impersonation of “Boudoir Boris ” given by Adolphe Menjou. who is believed by the world of fashion to be the accepted suitor for the hand of the Princess (Grace Moore). The supporting programme includes several good films, in which a clever comedy is the outstanding feature.
