BURNED BY SODA.

Little Girl Dies as Result of Drinking Poison. CORONER'S COMMENT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, October 8. The dangers of leaving caustic soda within the reach of children was pointed out by the Coroner, Mr M’Neil, during an inquest on Shirley Ethel Briant, aged three, who died on September 16. Caustic, especially in liquid form, Mr M’Neil said, could inflict terrible burns, and it behoved everyone not to leave any lying about. The little girl found some liquid caustic in a vacant house near her home and had drunk it. She was taken to the hospital suffering from burns and was treated for three weeks before being discharged. She later was admitted again to hospital in a very weak condition, suffering from ulceration of the gullet. An operation was performed, but the child died soon afterwards. The verdict was that death was due to sudden heart failure, due to the weakened state of that organ and the weakened condition of the child. The Coroner added that he was satisfied that an operation was necessary and was properly performed.
