Progressive Association. A public meeting convened by the East Linwood and Woolston Progressive Association was held this week for the purpose of considering the question of raising funds to equip Linwood Park with amusements for the children. Air G. Disney presided. Several proposals n were put before the meeting. The Lu>wood Avenue School Committee intimated that it would do what it could e to help in the matter. The following were appointed a committee to act in *■ conjunction with the association: Mrs b Harrington, Alessrs Nuttal, Ives, Jones ; - and Wimm.s. The entertainment took the form of a nigger minstrel show, and was followed by . community singing, under the leadership ; of Air H. R. Williams, with Mr Norman b Carson at the piano and. Air W. East © (banjo). As a result of this concert the church funds will benefit to the extent . of approximately £lO. Those taking the principal parts in the minstrel show r were:—Alessrs J. T. Armstrong and other i church helpers also assisted in arrang--5 ing the entertainment. \ Sumner Public Library. r The chairman of the Sumner Public t Library Committee, Air C. I. Denham, presided at the bi-monthly meeting held 3 last night. Others present were: —Mesdames W. 11. Nicholson, H. J. Alarriner, I W. U. Brown, D. Smith, Misses Selby and Willett and Air G. F. Allen. The j \ town clerk of Sumner wrote expressing the council’s appreciation of the efforts : of the committee in promoting the popu- ' larity of the library and securing a large number of new volumes. The ladies’ “ voluntary committee reported that the non-fiction section had been re-classified, : and that book repairs had been kept ; up to date. It was decided that the 1 voluntary librarians arrange for extra assistance if necessary. The secretary ■ of the Dominion Libraries’ Association I wrote stating that headquarters would now be situated in Christchurch. it was decided to continue the membership and to record the annual report of the association when it was received. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £IS 17s 3d. Subscriptions for the past three months amounted to £lB 5s 6d; extras £4 5s 9d. The selection committee reported that large supplies of books were coming to hand each month. It was resolved to thank Airs G. A. Alexander l'or her past services as honorary librarian. Concert at Sumner. A successful concert was held 1n the St Paul’s Methodist Sunday schoolroom. Sumner, on Thursday evening, in aid of the seating funds of the Sunday school. The arrangements were in the hands of Mr H. C. Ford and Mr W. J. Duff was chairman. On behalf of the trustees All* Duff thanked Aliss Alona Neal for the fine programme, and also Aliss Wilcox, Airs H. W. Heslop, Aliss E. Le Page arid Air T. Cook. Miss Alona Neal was presented with a small token of appreciation during the evening. Aliss Wilcox; violin solo, “II Trovatore," Miss Kathleen Wilson; piano duet, “Garden Dreams,” Alisses Joyce Hulston and Atona Neale; trio, “The Silent Prayer,” Alisses Kathleen Wilson, Margaret Wilson and Air W. Miss Wilcox; trio, “ Alarche Alilitaire,” Alisses Alary and Iris Creagh and Mona Neale. Air Ford was accorded a vote of thanks for arranging the concert. Lodge Meeting. The Loyal Riccarton Lodge, J.0.0.F.. AT.U., met on Thursday last. Brother C. J. Holmes, N. 0., presided. Several members were declared on the sick funds and one declared off. Alotions of sympathy were passed with the widows and relatives of tin? late Brother A. L. Gourlav. 1’.P.0.A!., and late Brother W. Diffin, P.G., and one funeral claim was passed for payment. One maternity allowance was passed for payment. It. was reported that the last fortnightly social had been a success. The N.G. reported that all arrangements had been completed for the anniversary dance to he held in the lodge room on Saturdav, October 15. Brother A. Biggs, P.G., reported that the repairs and alterations to the hall, both inside and outside, had been completed. A vote of thanks was passed to Brother Biggs for his work in connection with the repairs, and also t<> those other members who had assisted him.
