HANDCRAFTS AT THE SHOW

The Women's Expert Handcraft Exhibition at the Winter Show has created a great deal of interest, and attracted many hundreds, in fact thousands of people, during the last week. Not only are the women interested, but men find they can spend a profitable few minutes in examining and admiring the varied display of expert handcraft, which gives ample proof that the women of Canterbury are capable of producing beautiful work. This section is an innovation introduced this year by the Women’s Auxiliary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, who are to be congratulated on their venture, as this section has added considerably to the attractiveness of the show, besides encouraging women in the finer arts. The versatility of the exhibitors is shown by pictures of all kinds—raffia, crushed paper, luminous, silk needlework, Indian ink. pen paintings, cross stitch—even a picture worked in human hair is to he seen. Beaten copper, pewter and silver, inset with enamels and precious and semi-precious stones, beautifully painted china, painted and stained plaques, barbola work, knitted and crochet shawls, garments, and baby outfits, embroidery, tatting. barbola. leather and plaster of paris brooches, and necklets of all descriptions: also lampshades in parchment and silk.
