OTIRA EXCURSION.

Weather favoured the 193 persons who travelled to Arthur’s Pass or Otira yesterday, when the Railway Department ran the first of these popular excursions this winter. It was a perfect day for tramping and some sixty or seventy enjoyed the fine walk over the Pass. Those who went prepared for ski-ing and winter sports were disappointed, for there was no snow either at Arthur’s Pass or Otira. Warm clothing was out of order, coats, sweaters and gloves being quickly shed. The journey over the Pass takes an average walker about three hours, but the wonderful mountain scenery was responsible for longer times being occupied. There was plenty of time for the walk, but a watchful railway official saw that none of those who undertook it missed the train.
