Mayor Refers to Death of Mr T. J. Edmonds.
Reference to the death of Mr T. J. idmonds was made this morning by he Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.). “ The death of Mr Edmonds removes rom our midst one of the most philanhropic citizens we have known,” he stated. “Mr and Mrs Edmonds, to :elebrate their fifty years’ residence n this city, generously provided the iew band rotunda and the clock tower lear the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church. These are undoubted assets to ;he city and have been very much Ldmired by visitors. These gifts will ceep the memory of Mr Edmonds fresh n the minds of the community. Mr Edmonds also arranged for the layout >f Cambridge Terrace in the vicinity >f the Rotunda and named it Poplar Crescent, after his birthplace.
“ The gifts to the city included the >rovision of an organ in the new Colombo Street Baptist Church, and a ite for the proposed memorial to the ate Professor Bickerton in the vicinity *f the professor’s former residence. Mr Edmonds was noted for his private harity, and never turned a deaf ear vhen approached for assistance for ny deserving cause. “On behalf of the City Councillors, he citizens and myself, I have sent a etter expressing our sympathy with ■frs Edmonds and her family in their >ereavement, and I am sure that that xpresses the feelings of the whole of he people of Christchurch.”
