MARSHLAND NOTES.
At the monthly meeting of the Marshland School Committee there wene present: Mr D. Goode (chairman), Mrs G. chisnall and Messrs G. Chisnall, D. Boyd and J. W. Berry. The headmaster reported that the school roll was 90, and the average attendance for last term was 87. The question of joining the Canterbury Scliool Committees' Association was discussed. The committee favoured tlm proposal, but deferred action pending the obtaining of further information. The resignation of the headmaster (Mr If. F. Gabites), who has been appointed to the position of headmaster of the West Lyttelton School, was accepted with regret. Mr Gabites, who has been at the Marshland School for the past three years, takes up his duties in his mew position at the beginning of July. Farewell Social. The Marshland Hall was well filled when the residents of the district met to b’d farewell to Mr and Mrs Sturgiss. To pxppress the esteem in which Mr and Mrs Sturgiss are held, Mr Waugh presentedthem with a handsome palm-bowl. On behalf of the Sports Club, of which Mr Sturgiss has been an enthusiastic member, Mr Clark (president) asked him to accept a smokers outfit. Mr G. Chisnall spoke of the popularity in which the guests of the evening were held and mentioned the good work done by Mrs Sturgiss on behalf of the Plunket Society. The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with vocal items.
