Good Play in Annual T ournament. A GRADE WON BY UNITED. The annual all-day basket-ball tournament held on the King’s Birthday for the Brown Cup (A grade), the Referees’ Cup (senior B), the Florence Williams Cup (junior B) and the Association Trophy (C grade) was concluded late yesterday afternoon by electric light at South Hagley Park. The A grade comnetition was won by United by two goals from last year’s winners Sacred Heart and in the senior L> grade Beckenham had a walk-over. The winners fn the junior B and C grades respectively were A.B.C. St Mary’s also were had a draw with Sacred Heart in the first round, against whom Mairehau, also put up the surprisingly even score of four goals to three in the next round. The final match was United A v. Sacred Heart A, United winning and thus taking the trophy front Sacred Heart, who held it last year. St Mary s came close with six points. Sacred Heart and United standing at seven and nine respectively. Some Good Play. Sacred Heart v. United.—lnterest ran high and, though the artificial light did not make for the best play, some excellent work was put in. S. Whigmore (United) passed well to N. Betts and some quick goals resulted. A long pass also gave a goal to United and O. Jenkins made some good saves under the post. V. Flood (Sacred Heart) was in excellent form all afternoon and played a steadv game throughout the final match. Score: United 3, Sacred Heart 1. The senior B competition, with six teams playing, was finished earlier than was expected through Te Kaha defaulting owing to a short number of players. Interest was somewhat lacking, as Beckenham did not look like losing after the first round or two, when it seemed an if West Old Girls A and Sacred Heart B might give a little trouble. Merivale has some promising players In J. Howard and K. Biddle. Junior B Grade—A.B.C. put up the best showing in this grade and their play was sharp and clean. The B.S.C. team was close in points and played well, but the final was between the A.B.C. A and B teams, the score being 2-1. The C grade was won by Mairehau B (Section 1) from West Old Girls C (Section 4). The teams in the semifinals were:—Spreydon, West Old Girls, Mairehau, Marewa and Celtic A. The games in this section were scrambling, though keen and willing. The final match offered the best from the spectators’ point of view, though here again the failing light somewhat hindered the players. Score: Mairehau 3, West Old Girls 1. Results were as folldws:— A Grade. Final—United 3, Sacred Heart A 1. Senior B Grade. Final—Beckenham A won. Junior B Grade. Final—AßC A 3. ABC B 1. C Grade. Final—Mairehau B 3, Celtic B 1.
