£IO,OOO to Provide Work for Unemployed. MELBOURNE MAN’S GIFT. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received November 26, 11.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, November 26. Mr Sidney Mver informed the director of the National Prosperity Campaign that he had decided to provide £IO,OOO immediately to give work to a thousand married men with families for two weeks. The work, which is to be paid for at award rates, will be given during December.
Mr Sidney B. Myer is governing director of the Myer Emporium. Ltd., Melbourne, and the Myer Woollen Mills Propty., Ltd., Ballarat. In 1926 he presented to the University of Melbourne 25,000 £1 shares in the Myer Emporium, their value at that time being £50,000. The only condition attaching to the gift was the request of the donor that the authorities retain ownership of the shares until they are worth JIOO.OOO. Mr Myer is also famous for other munificent benefactions.
