New Zealand’s Plans.
To th« Editor. Dear Sir,—So Mr Howard beat the cable man badly with his news on the China 10year plan. It’s an interesting tit-bit anyhow, and the cable on the front page of Saturday night’s “ Star ** was still interesting reading despite the fact that your back page gave the news weeks before. This makes me wonder if New Zealand’s plans are being cabled abroad; or are Farmers Coates and Forbes made of rarer stuff? Possibly it is faith, the vital part with them, the faith that butter and wool will rise as the morning sun, and New Zealand will have more cows, more sheep, and that wonderful name for dull respectability so that we can borrow more motor-cars, silk stockings, fur coats and a bit of the British Navy in time of trouble. What a terrible thing it would be if one of our farmers, who hold the political power levers, really suggested a plan which would help Great Britain, the youth of this country and the thousand and one souls who thirst to be at worthwhile jobs. The thought strains my imagination too much! But again I hear him chanting ** Sheep and cows,” “ Sheep and cows.”—l am, etc., L. C. WALKER
