January 10th, 1664. Up, without any kindness to my wife, and so to the office, where we sat alt the morning. After dinner to my office again till very late, and my eyes began to fail me and be in pain, which I never felt to nowadays; which I impute to sitting up late writing and reading by candlelight. So home to supper and to bed. January 20th, 1664. My Lord Sandwich came upon me, to speak with whom my business of coming again to-night to this ende of the town chiefly was, in order to the seeing m what manner he received me. He treated me, though with respect, yet as a stranger, without any of the intimacy or friendship which he used to do.
