THIS PANORAMIC VIEW OF PART OF THE BUSINESS SECTION OF NAPIER covers the bulk of the area devastated by earthquake and fire in February last. Although a great quantity of the debris lias been cleared away, it will be noticed that many of the blocks are in much the same condition as they were left after the calamity. Some well-known places in the area are numbered. (1) The Post Office. (2) The Caledonian Hotel, one of few which survived the ’quake and fire. (3) Dalgety’s building, which suffered little loss. (4) The Catholic Church, which remained intact. (5) The Public Trust, which outwardly showed little evidence of damage, but was affected structurally and is now being repaired. (6) The ruins of St Paul’s Presbyterian Church, which had been completed just before the ’quake. Services are now held in the corrugated iron building on the adjacent site.
