ROUND THE SUBURBS

Social and Dance. The Woolston Public Library held a successful social and dance in the Druids’ Hall on Saturday evening. Competitions were won by Miss Ray, Mrs Adkins and Messrs E. Eastwick and A. Graham, and the lucky spot onestep was won by Miss Johnston and Mr Hay. Mr C. White supplied the music for dancing and Mr C. Lilburne was M.C. Lodge Meeting. The Star of Opawa Lodge, No. 30, held its fortnightly meeting in the Staretta Hall, Wilson’s Road, the N.G., Brother 11. J. Spence, presiding over a large attendance. After lodge business a lantern lecture entitled “ Historical Scotland ” was given by P.G. Brother Taylor, M.U., 1.0.0. F., and was much appreciated. Dancing, musical items and games, followed by supper, brought a pleasant evening to a close. Beautifying Association. The Sumner Beach Improvement and Beautifying Association met on Friday evening. Mr S. K. Bassett presiding. A report upon Scarborough Bark showed that two grass fires had seriously damaged the work aono by the association, nearly one hundred and fifty trees out of a total of six hundred being affected and many destroyed. It was decided to bring the matter under the notice of the police. The chairman reported that the prompt action of the fire brigade had resulted in the beating out of the fire and in the prevention of much further damage. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to the superintendent, Mr G. Harper. The question of fire breaks in Scarborough Park was left in the hands of Messrs H. C. Jamieson, IX Smith and W. H. Brown. It was decided to replace the trees burnt with suitable young trees. The secretary, Mr J. S. Young, reported that a large number of geraniums were awaiting planting. It was agreed to provide suitable protection until the planting weather arrived. Cypress trees, donated by Mr R. B. Owen for planting on the hills above the tram terminus, were left in the hands of Messrs IT. C. Jamieson and J. S. Young. The pedestrian track at Clifton was reported to be dangerous to traffic. It was decided to place the facts before tlio Borough Council. The treasurer’s balance was reported to be £l7 16s 6d. In. reporting upon the proposals for this year’s work it was stated that promise of assistance with the planting at St Leonard’s Square had been disappointing. The association was not receiving much support in that area. It was decided to inspect the area at the west end of the Clifton Causeway with a view to providing a small rock garden, the matter to be left to Messrs A. J. Scott, J. S. Young and S. K. Bassett for a report. Mr J. F. Buxton, Clifton, reported that the plantations of native shrubs were looking very healthy. It was decided to procure extra trees. It was also decided to assist with the planting of the grounds of the Sumner District High School. Plans for edging the extension of the esplanade near Grafton Street with rock and for beautifying it were held over till a rough plan could he secured from the Borough Council.
