BASKETBALL

SATURDAY’S MATCHES. 1»- . . _ j Although the weather was dull and cold on Saturday, the Canterbury Basketball Association matches at Hagley Park were played with vigour, and some very fine matches were witnessed, shewing evidence of regular practice in team combination. Training College A and Sacred Heart A gave a fine display, the teams being well matched. The centres in each team put up a strong fight, and Sacred Heart A worked hard in the defence, F. Maxwell playing an outstanding game. Both teams battled hard to the end, but Training College managed to win by one goal. Score: Training College A .3, Sacred Heart A 4. Tteferee: W. Brewer. United v. Canterbury College B. United had an easy victory over Canterbury College B. Their play was good, and they passed the ball well down the line, making it very difficult for Canterbury College to score. The Canterbury College defence was fair, but, although good triers, the players did not seem m their usual form, and were unable to keep the ball from their opponents. United 22, Canterbury College B 1. Referee: Mrs Dawber. Training* College B v. Ballantyne’s A. • the scores recorded by Trainlng College B and Ballantyne’s A were fairly even. Training College played the better game. Ballantyne’s seemed inclined to be reckless in throwing the ball and missed many opportunities at goal. Score: Training College B 4, Ballantyne s A 3. Referee: Mrs Holland. Technical B v. Merivale A. Technical B showed some good passmg in their match against Merivale A. Merivale put up a strong defence, J. Aigie playing well. Although Technical macle a good score, they missed many opportunities, appearing over-anxious, and not taking sufficient time to place their shots accurately. Score: Technical B 11. Merivale A 5. Referee: M. Kershaw. Training College C v. Rigby's B. The game between Digby’s B and Training College C was hardly up to standard, too much fumbling and many .‘V-directed passes being in evidence. This resulted in rugged play, and Technical College missed many chances at goal, pigby’s centres were rather wild m their throwing of the ball. Score: 1 raining College C 7, Bigby’s B 4.
