DUNEDIN WINS KENNETT CUP.

BARNES RUNS FIRST IN 31 MILES RACE. One of the largest fields seen in a Canterbury cross-country race faced the starter at the Riccarton Racecourse this afternoon, when the Christchurch Harrier Club held the second annual Kennett Cup race. There were ninety entries, from every harrier club in Christchurch and including teams from Wellington and Dunedin. The race for the Ollivier Cup for the first man home in the Kennett Cup race was also run off. Results:— J. G. BARNES (Civil Service, Dunedin) 1 J. J. MORRIS (Caversham, Dunedin) 2 R. NT. BARRER (Christchurch) .. 3 G. 11. WATSON (Christchurch) .. 4 E. C. BROWN (Civil Service) .. 5 F. B. SILVER (Scottish) C L. C. MACLACHLAN (Civil Service) 7 L. 11. SINCLAIR (Scottish) S A. L. Stevens (Scottish) 9 A. D. PARK (Baptist) 10 The teams race for the Kennett Cup was won by Dunedin Civil Service, with 27 points. Scottish, with 36 points, were second. J. G. BARNES (Civil Service) won the Ollivier Cup for the first man home in the race. HOW THE RACE WENT. From the start Silver (Scottish, Wellington) led, followed by Watson and Fraser. Barret' was lying well back. Going round the first bend, Barnes moved up to third place. Silver, Barnes and Richards were together when the first sod wall was reached. Here Fraser went to the front. At the Kennels Double the order was Barnes, Silver, Watson and R. M. Barrer. At the big sod wall, Barnes dropped back to third place. The first mile was done in 6min 5 2-ssec. Silver led at the top of the straight, followed by Barnes and Watson. The time for the first lap was Smin 17sec. Coming up the home straight in the second lap, the order was Barnes, Watson, R. M. Barrer, Silver, Haslam and B. A. Barrer. Round the first bend on the second lap Barnes, Morris and Barrer led the field. Morris led over Cutts’s, followed by Barnes. At this point Barnes drew ahead, gaining some times ten yards at each fence. Barnes reached the Kennel’s Double in 13min 42sec and had a comfortable lead. Round the bend Barrer reduced his lead on the flat, followed by Watson and Morris. The big sod wall was reached in 14min 32sec. Bacnps again increased his lead. At the second to last fence Morris improved his position, while Watson dropped well back. Barnes led into the straight to win comfortably in 17min 40 2-ssec. Morris passed Barrer with a strong finish to run into second position. Watson also made a strong finishing run.
